Raising fish isn’t just about adding water! Do you really understand how the filtration system works?

Many people start keeping fish because they love the beauty, the tranquility, or to enhance feng shui. But not long after, they encounter problems like green water, cloudy water, or sick and dying fish. What began as a joyful experience quickly turns into frustration. Even after following others’ advice—adding beneficial bacteria, installing UV lights—the problems still persist.

Because it is the heart of a fish pond—keeping the water clean and providing a healthy environment for the fish. Imagine this: if you're keeping many fish in the same pond, all the uneaten food, fish waste, fallen leaves, and airborne dust become waste that accumulates in the water. Without anything to manage it, the water will gradually turn murky, start to smell, and eventually become a breeding ground for harmful bacteria.

The filtration system is like a "water purifier"—it traps waste before it enters the pond, separating impurities from the water. Nowadays, there are systems that can automatically filter and clean themselves, known as drum filters, which significantly reduce the burden on fish keepers.

The filtration system consists of several components, which can be categorized as follows:

  • Mechanical Filter (Coarse Filter): Traps large debris such as uneaten food, fish waste, and algae.

  • Fine Filter: Captures small particles like dust and fine impurities in the water.

  • Biological Filter: Hosts beneficial bacteria that break down harmful waste products like ammonia.

  • UV Filter: Helps kill harmful pathogens and reduce algae growth in the water.

If the filtration system is good, the water will be clear, the fish will stay healthy, and maintaining the pond will be much easier. But without a filtration system... the water will become foul, the fish will be stressed, and you'll have to clean the pond very frequently.

Next time, we’ll talk about the different types of filters and how each one works.

If you're planning to build a fish pond or facing issues with unclear water, the right filtration system might be exactly what you need. Feel free to contact us if you'd like advice or a recommendation for a filtration setup that's suitable for your pond.
